The National Park De Maasduinen is a beautiful terraced landscape with lower and higher sandy soils, the Maas valley and a plateau. You should really explore this area by bike. This route takes you through this national park, but also along the other side of the Maas.
National Park De Maasduinen
In National Park De Maasduinen you cycle through heaths and forest areas with coniferous trees. This vegetation has been planted to keep the shifting sand in check. As a result, the sand no longer drifts actively. The heart of the woods and heaths is the Hamert estate, as it was called in 1998. The Maasduinen are maintained in a natural way by allowing Galloway cattle, sheep and goats to graze here. If you cycle more towards the German border, the nature reserves become less dense. The landscape changes slowly from forests to fields and meadows.
Castle Boxmeer
On this route you also cycle past Boxmeer Castle Museum. This castle is located on a former island on the Maas and was built in the fourteenth century. Until 1568 the castle was inhabited by the Lords and Women of Boxmeer. In 1572 an order was given to demolish the castle and the moat was filled in. Later, two new wings were added to the castle and in the end the castle has been preserved. A museum is located in the cellars of the old castle where you can view drawings and models that illustrate the history of the building.
