Cycling through the polders of Hollands Kroon

This route takes you through Hollands Kroon, a beautiful region in North Holland where villages such as Den Oever and Wieringerwaard are located. You will enjoy beautiful views and the former island of Wieringen.

On Wieringen
Wieringen was an island in the Zuiderzee for centuries. In 1924, the island was 'connected' to North Holland by means of dikes and land reclamation. From the moraines in this area, you have beautiful views over the low-lying polders, the Amstelmeer, the IJsselmeer and of course the Wadden Sea. On the former island, there are still a few boulders, and here and there you can still see a few authentic garden walls of about a meter high that served as property boundaries.

Robbenoordbos
You cycle a bit through the Robbenoordbos, which was planted with oaks, alders and beeches in the thirties. Wieringerwaard was once located on the Zuiderzee, but is now a picturesque village in the middle of the polder. Here you see the White Church from 1865. A little further on you pass the Polderhuis, which was the first in the village to be built in 1612. At Restaurant Basalt you can enjoy a coffee, lunch or dinner with a view of the fishing harbour.

Turbulent Wieringen
Wieringen has a rich and eventful history. In the ninth century, the island was a base for Danish Vikings for a short time. Ships returning from the East during the VOC period would put sick sailors ashore on the west side of Wieringen - more or less within sight of the ports of Enkhuizen, Hoorn and Amsterdam. This quarantine was intended to prevent diseases from spreading ashore. After the First World War, Wieringen served as a place of exile for the escaped German Crown Prince Wilhelm from 1918 to 1923.
