Description

Streams, ditches, hedges and dikes, which are covered with double rows of trees. Nurseries, where the fruit grows lushly, but is grown on a small scale. The plots in the Zak van Zuid-Beveland National Landscape are irregularly distributed, which creates a small-scale, but green landscape. The irregular microrelief was created by the extraction of salt from peat, but it is also shaped by the many drinking pools and the beautiful hawthorn hedges that characterize the area. There are also some Vliedbergs, hills raised in the Middle Ages, to which residents fled at high tide or on which motte-and-bailey castles were built. It is a wonderful place to cycle through the flat land. Departure in a northeasterly direction to the village of Nisse. There is De Poel, a mill that is equipped with two pairs of millstones that are used to allow the mill to grind wheat on a voluntary basis. The octagonal ground sailer was built in 1752 and until 1797 the mill was owned by the Craft Lords of Nisse. Afterwards the mill had different owners. Until 1949, the owners had the mill professionally milled entirely using wind power. You cycle via's-Heer Hendrikskinderen to Wolphaartsdijk, where you see another mill in a beautiful location. This round brick mill is called De Hoop and was built in 1808 on a dike. When the mill was built, it was still a ground sailer, but in 1894 De Hoop was made 10.5 meters higher and converted into a tower mill. After a fire raged in the mill in 1993, the top cover was replaced and the hull was made 70 centimeters higher. All these changes have given De Hoop a unique appearance. There is also a tower mill in the next village, which is called the Nooit Gedacht. This round, stone mill was built in 1872 to replace a mill in's-Heer Arendskerke, which burned down in the same year. Until the early 1970s, the mill was used to professionally grind wheat into flour, after which the mill was sold to a foundation for a small, symbolic amount. This foundation was established specifically to maintain the mill and carried out large-scale restorations of the building in 1988 and 1999. De Vijf Gebroeders is a flour mill that you can see in Heinkenszand. It is a round, brick mill with a slope of over 21 meters. De Vijf Gebroeders replaces an earlier mill at another location in the village, which burned down after a lightning strike two years before its construction in 1851. The mill remained in operation until the early 1960s, but then fell into disrepair. From 1968 to 1970 the mill was restored in working order. After this, decay occurred again, which meant that the mill had to be restored again in 2005. During the repair work the upper shaft broke, after which a new one had to be cast. The old windshaft remained next to the mill. The next mill on the route is De Hoop (rump/remains), which is located in the same village. Why the former mill is no longer suitable for grinding can be seen at a glance: the entire structure is missing and what remains is only a bare hull. Until 1947, De Hoop milled grain on a professional basis with two pairs of millstones. In the years that followed, the mill was gradually further dismantled: in 1960 the scaffolding and the tail disappeared, in 1970 the refuge was removed and in 1982 the mill was stripped of its roof. The last mill you see is De Blazekop, west of the village of Ovezande, which in 2013 has fewer than 2,000 inhabitants. The monumental flour mill was built in 1884 from parts that probably had an earlier destination in a polder mill that stood in Eemnes. The mill fell into disrepair after 1995, because it operated less and less regularly. The mill was restored in June 2010. Among other things, the Bilau sail system was installed and a year later the mill was operational again.
