Description

Zak van Zuid-Beveland National Landscape is small-scale and green. The landscape is divided into irregular blocks or plots by streams, ditches, hedges and dikes. The irregular microrelief was created by the extraction of salt from peat, but it is also shaped by the many drinking pools and by the beautiful hawthorn hedges in the area. There are also a few refuge mountains, which were raised by residents of the area in the Middle Ages to build old wooden castles, or where they fled during high water. The dikes are covered with double rows of trees and fruit nurseries grow their fruit between hawthorn hedges on small pieces of land, while the landscape north of Nisse has upright vegetation and therefore has an open character. Park your car for free at Supermarket Attent Verbeek in Nisse and do your shopping here for the road. How about a nice refreshing drink of water, a delicious savory piece of cheese or a thirst-quenching apple, which you can enjoy in the polder or during a special train journey? Once you have paid for your groceries, get on your bike and head towards Hoedekenskerke. After just under three kilometers you will come across a round stone ground sailor on a small rise, hidden among the orchards. This coulter mill was built in 1874 to replace another mill that was destroyed by fire. Grain was ground with this mill until 1964. The mill has two pairs of grinding stones, but only one of them can be used to operate the mill. After a number of years of standstill, flour has been regularly produced at the Koutermolen since 2008. Hoedekenskerke SGB is a nice attraction in the village. Grab a steam train or railcar and take a ride on the old railway line that runs from Hoedekenskerke via Kwadendamme to Goes. The railway dates from the 1930s and crosses the beautiful open Zeeland landscape, while the nostalgic trains let you enjoy a fun ride. Experience what it was like to travel by train in the past, on the wooden benches of the third class or sink into the soft cushions of the second and first class. You cycle a long way through the polder and arrive at the edge of 's-Gravenpolder at De Korenhalm, a mill that was built in 1876. The Korenhalm was built 50 meters away from the spot where another mill burned down. From a distance you can see the round, brick flour mill looming on the horizon; the mill is clearly visible from all sides and stands free in the landscape. Finally, you will come across another mill in Nisse: the Poel. This octagonal ground sailor was built in 1752. After the Craft Lords of Nisse relinquished the building in 1797, De Poel changed owners several times. Until 1949, the mill operated on wind power and the mill is equipped with two pairs of millstones, which are now used to allow the mill to grind wheat on a voluntary basis. When you return to the supermarket, we recommend that you take the opportunity to buy the ingredients for a delicious dinner here. This way you can prepare a tasty meal at home, in the comfort of your own kitchen. You can end the day relaxed and cozy at your own dining table with a nice glass of wine and your favorite meal.
