Description
In the northeast of Friesland it is wonderful to cycle through a vast, wide polder landscape. You will find some picturesque terp villages. And beautiful old churches and mills.
Terp village Anjum
The first sight is the Ropta, a corn and hulling mill from 1836. In Morra you can take a look at the beautiful thirteenth-century Sint-Johanneskerk. In the beautiful terp village of Anjum you can see De Eendracht, a flour mill from 1889 that houses a museum. The beautiful Michaelkerk dates from 1100, it is partly built of tuff.
Lauwersmeer
From Oostmahorn you have a beautiful view of the Lauwersmeer National Park. Along the banks you can enjoy the rugged nature and un-Dutch silence, except during the time of the goose migration. The lock in Ezumazijl originally dates from 1672. A little further on is De Gans, a polder mill from 1850. The terp villages of Ee (which has the shortest place name in the Netherlands) and Metslawier enjoy a protected village view. Take the time to enjoy the historic atmosphere.
