Description
With this route you will discover the charm of Het Buitenveld, an unspoilt and varied nature reserve between the Frisian villages of Giekerk and Veenwouden. You will also visit Dokkum and several villages with centuries-old churches.
Picturesque Dokkum
This historic fortified city was founded in 754 and has more than 140 national monuments. You will experience the characteristic historic atmosphere here without difficulty. Just past junction 57 you enter the Buitenveld. You will see a mix of grasslands, swamp forests, open water ponds and extensive reed and brush fields. In this cozy landscape you will still find old-fashioned tranquility. What a beautiful area!
Village of States
In Tietjerk you will pass the beautiful St. Vitus Church. A little later you will see Groot Vijversburg on your left, a historic estate. The thatched Ypey mill dates from 1858, this polder mill has been at its current location since 1981.
