From Son en Breugel you can take a beautiful trip to the Oirschotse Heide. First you loosen your legs as you cycle along the leafy Wilhelmina Canal. On the other side of the water you pass through Batadorp. This district was built in 1934 for the workers of the Bata shoe factory. The original buildings are considered a protected villagescape. Further on you cross the Beatrix Canal and soon drive through the forests of the Oirschotse Heide. On the cycle path you can fully enjoy the peace and the fragrant conifers. In Oirschot you will see some beautiful monumental buildings. The Maria Church is located on the Vrijthof: a twelfth-century building in Romanesque style. Just before Best you will pass two special chapels. The route ends at Hotel & Restaurant La Sonnerie.

5691NC Son en Breugel
On September 17, 1944, 4,500 American paratroopers landed successfully on the heath north of Son. The paratroopers immediately left for the bridge over the Wilhelmina Canal to conquer it and advance to Eindhoven. The Germans continuously fired at the American soldiers. The Americans managed to get close to the bridge anyway, but then the bridge was blown up by the Germans. The Germans then withdrew. On the night of 18 to 19 September, the British built a Bailey Bridge with all their might. In the early morning the bridge was ready and tanks and other heavy equipment could cross the water. The Germans eventually had to withdraw.
