This cycle route takes you on a journey of discovery through the cultural landscape of the 'Zaanstreek': old polders, straight drained land, mills, winding ditches, straight waterways, well-preserved 16th and 17th century villages and lots of nature waiting to be discovered. The Zaanstreek is the oldest industrial area in Europe. The most important industries are wood processing and the food industry. The region is located on both sides of the Zaan and contains a maze of ditches and canals. Directly opposite the Zaandijk, you will encounter the Zaanse Schans. This beautiful route takes you past historic villages such as Oostzaan and Wormer, which are part of the special history of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and West India Company (WIC) and shipbuilding. You start and end at Cafe Brasserie Het Heerenhuis in Wijdewormer, which is located in the centuries-old Wijdewormer polder. A wonderful place to have lunch after your cycle tour.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
