Description

This cycle route brings together the best of two worlds: the lively centers of Vlaardingen and Delft and the tranquility of Midden-Delfland. The route starts at TOP Vlaardingen (where you can easily park your car) and takes you back to Vlaardingen via Delft, Den Hoorn, Schipluiden, Maasland and Maassluis. During your bike ride you will pass numerous sights. You can cycle through the historic center in Delft, you will come across the beautiful picturesque'Op Hodenpijl\\\' in Schipluiden and you can get off in Vlaardingen to take a trip on the whisper boat (available from April to October). ). Vlaardingen is a versatile city. It is the city where the oldest excavations in Western Europe have been made, the city that was declared the Greenest City of the Netherlands in 2009 and even became the Greenest City of Europe in 2010! Today Vlaardingen has a bustling center with many cozy shops, where you can find the large retail chains and unique boutiques. But the signs of earlier times are still clearly visible. The many monumental buildings are reminders of the city's unique and rich fishing past. From the TOP in Vlaardingen you cycle towards Delft, a pleasant historic city. Opposite the Town Hall is the New Church (1381). This church, where you can view the tomb of William of Orange and where members of the royal house are buried, has the second highest church tower in the Netherlands. You then head towards the Markt where you see the beautiful old town hall that was built in 1620. Then you cycle into the oasis of tranquility of Midden-Delfland. Midden-Delfland is an ideal cycling area with long, often separate cycle paths. Along the way you will come across a large number of cozy rest stops to catch your breath and, for example, have a bite to eat or enjoy the old Dutch peat meadow landscape. As usual in the province of South Holland, you will also find many windmills in this region. During this cycle route you will pass the windmills; Mercurius (hull/remnant), Three Lilies, Dijkmolen and Aeolus. This windmill of Vlaardingen is a characteristic building and can be found in the center, located on the Kortedijk. A mill must turn. That sounds obvious, but it isn't. Certainly not if the mill is more than 200 years old. Craftsmanship and maintenance maintain the Aeolus windmill on the Kortedijk. This cycle route is offered to you by the South Holland Tourism Board. For more information, visit www.fietseninzuidholland.nl.
