You can take a wonderful bike ride around Enkhuizen. Enjoy the panoramic view over the IJsselmeer, explore the historic towns in this area and then cycle through the quiet polders that are so typical of this part of the Netherlands. This route takes you through the center of Enkhuizen and through Bovenkarspel.

Zuiderzee Museum
VVV Enkhuizen on the outskirts of Enkhuizen is the starting point of this route. From here you cycle through the center of Enkhuizen and along the edge of the IJsselmeer. Along the way you will pass the Zuiderzee Museum. Here you can learn more about the time when the IJsselmeer was still the Zuiderzee. This sea was closed in 1932 with the Afsluitdijk. You will also learn more about what daily life was like in the 1930s. Children can take part in a treasure hunt, walk on stilts or try one of the other fun activities in the museum.

Barefoot Path
A little further along the route you will pass the Bare Foot Path near Het Streekbos. Put your bike down and take off your shoes to explore this path on foot. Along the way you will pass a windmill, a bird pond and a herb garden.

Historical sights
Other sights on the route are the Ceres mill and De Ostory. Mill Ceres is a flour mill that was built in 1849 as the successor to a standard mill. In 1998 the mill was extensively restored. The Ostory is an industrial monument that was used in the 17th century to transfer barges from the polder to the Zuiderzee. The boat lift was restored in 1993 and has since been used for recreational boats and barges.

You will almost be short of eyes there. Smell the sea water, walk along cobblestone streets and admire authentic houses, various shops, workshops and churches in villages along the former Zuiderzee. Help craftsmen in the Markerwaard knitting nets or twist a rope in the rope-making workshop. Do you also want to take a look at the treasury of the Zuiderzee?
