This cycle route meanders through the Bommelerwaard, a region embraced by the Maas and Waal. You pass through picturesque towns such as the fortified town of Zaltbommel and Ammerzoden.

Fortified town of Zaltbommel
At the Maas in Ammerzoden you have a beautiful view over the Maas and start your route. A little further on you will pass the well-preserved Ammersoyen Castle. In Bruchem you will see Landgoed Groenhoven where a beautiful two hundred year old villa is located. Then you take a look at the monumental city center of Zaltbommel.

Fort Saint Andrews
It is quiet cycling on the dikes between Maas and Waal. For example, you drive along the Kil van Hurwenen, a bird-rich floodplain. Further on you will pass the remains of the largest military structure that the Spaniards built in 1599: Fort Sint Andries. Inland you mainly drive along flowery grasslands. Between Rossum and Kerkdriel you look out over the quay that is part of the classic Maasheggen landscape with its old oaks and hawthorns.

Ammersoyen Castle
On the outskirts of Ammerzoden you will pass Ammersoyen Castle, one of the best preserved authentic medieval castles in the Netherlands. With its striking corner towers and wide moat, it is truly a sight to behold. The castle still consists of one whole, which is quite exceptional since most castles have been added to over the centuries. The moated castle stands in an old Meuse bed that must have been cut off from the river before 1354. You can still clearly see the old Maas arm in the landscape. Ammersoyen Castle was very popular due to its strategic location on the Maas. It was conquered in 1386 by Duke William I of Gelre, when the lord of the castle wanted to enter into an alliance with Joanna of Brabant. At the end of the fifteenth century it was sold to the lords of Arkel, lords of the count of Holland. After the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648), various noble families owned the castle as a residence. During the Second World War, the castle was so badly damaged that the nuns, who had lived there since 1876, had to move. After the war, the castle came into the possession of the later Geldersch Landschap en Kasteelen Foundation.
