Tour of Schouwen-Duivenland

This cycling route takes you along city walls, gates and historical monuments in and around Zierikzee and lets you breathe in the atmosphere of the island of Schouwen-Duiveland. Zierikzee is a city with a rich history and is known as a city of monuments. For a relatively small city, Zierikzee has a large number of monuments. The most famous monument is the St. Lievens Monstertoren, which is popularly known as the Dikke Toren. In Zierikzee we visit windmill Den Haas. This scaffolding mill dates from 1727. In 1966 the mill was sold to the municipality and in 1987 the mill was put into use again. The mill has three pairs of millstones. From Zierikzee you cycle via Ouwerkerk in the direction of Nieuwerkerk. Nieuwerkerk is a church village, which originated in the 12th century, and is part of the Zeeland municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland. The Protestant church has a striking hexagonal tower, somewhat comparable to the octagonal tower of Kruiningen. You cycle the last part of this route via Oosterland (as a mill of the same name that we visit) and Ouwekerk back to Zierikzee.
