Discover North Friesland and its mills

Because of the constant wind in this region, the horizon is defined by the sails of the windmills. This traditional Dutch scene is truly breathtaking. At junction 30 in the eleven-city town of Dokkum, the route begins, leading us to the northernmost parts of Friesland. Dokkum is, of course, best known for the supposed murder of Boniface there in 754. In 1298, Dokkum became the fourth town in Friesland to receive city rights. Dokkum played a significant role during the Eighty Years' War. In 1572, the city was held by the Geuzen for several hours, for which Dokkum was severely punished. After 1579, the city joined the Union of Utrecht, and an era of peace began. The city is well worth a visit. Don't forget to visit the town hall, Admiralty House, Blokhus, the weigh house, and the churches. When we reach Dokkum again, the end point of this route, two more special windmills have been added that are definitely worth visiting/seeing. These are De Hoop and Zeldenrust windmills. Holwerd is primarily known for its ferry service to Ameland. There is also a receiving station for milk from Ameland farmers here. In Nes on Ameland, the milk is transported to Holwerd via a 15-kilometer-long pipeline. Hiking trail E9 runs through Holwerd. This trail runs along the coast from Portugal to the Baltic States. Another windmill near Holwerd is called De Hoop.
