The most famous windmill type in the Netherlands. Windmills were not only used to produce flour from cereals, but also for draining polder areas. Natural energy. The most famous windmills can be found in Kinderdijk, which have truly been set up as a polder model. A must see!

If you are on the Elshoutse Zeedijk you can see the remains of the Schans at Doeveren. The contours of this earthen defense work - in six points - are slightly higher than the rest of the landscape. The Schans was already in 1504 on the winding Elshoutse Zeedijk to defend this and the associated lock. And that was important to prevent the enemy from invading Heusden. Everyone saw that strategic importance, so the redoubt at Heusden was taken over and over again. By the Spaniards. Prince Maurice of Orange and the French. The redoubt was expanded several times, fell into disrepair and was renovated again. An eventful and busy place where it is now mainly quiet.

This fort is still part of the fortifications of Heusden and was used to protect the inundation lock. This lock made it possible to allow water to flow from the Maas in a controlled manner. Heusden was thus defended by the flooded land. Until 1952 the fort at Heusden was used as a fortification and was known militarily as "The work behind the Hoogen Maasdijk". The lock and fort now form a local and ecological connection zone for animals.
