Jacob van Lennep route, Part 28 (Varsseveld - Zutphen)

No more brandy
Monday July 28. It has taken some doing , but the hikers finally reach Doetinchem. The last kilometers Van Hogendorp carries the backpack of his deadly tired traveling companion. Van Lennep soon goes to sleep and vows never to drink lawyer or even brandy again.

Shame
The next morning, Van Lennep has a serious hangover. He doesn't want to walk, so they travel on by carriage. However, there is nothing wrong with Van Lenneps eyes, because he spots"many beautiful girls\\\" on the market. Further on they pass Castle Keppel, in the"old and beautifully built\\\" Doesburg they eat cherries in the Herenlogement. They drive on to Zutphen in a car. Here they have a meal in a lodging house at half past two, while Van Lennep keeps a low profile. Out of shame, because he only has a blue smock on, because the tear in his skirt coat is being repaired.

After dinner, the traveling companions walk through the old heart of Zutphen, which is still dotted with many historic buildings. They look at the ruins of the fourteenth-century Berkelpoort, among other things. In 1951 and 2011, the ruin was slightly reconstructed during a restoration, so that it looks slightly less dilapidated than in 1823. In the Walburgiskerk, walkers admire the Bader organ from 1639, a copper baptismal font from 1527, a seventeenth-century tomb and the library. Later that day they visit the Jewish physician Rosenstein, who has converted to Christianity. This man enjoys some fame among the local elite, although there are those who doubt him. Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp test the doctor's faith and'unmask\\\' him as a hypocrite.
