Jacob van Lennep route, Part 28 (Varsseveld - Zutphen)

No more brandy
Monday July 28. It took some time , but the walkers finally reached Doetinchem. During the last kilometers, Van Hogendorp carries the backpack of his extremely tired traveling companion. Van Lennep soon goes to sleep and resolves never to drink eggnog or even brandy again.

Shame
The next morning Van Lennep has a bad hangover. He doesn't want to walk, so they travel by carriage. However, there is nothing wrong with Van Lennep's eyes, because he spots "many beautiful girls" on the market. Further on they pass Keppel Castle, in the"old and beautifully built\\\" Doesburg they eat cherries in the Men's Lodge. They drive on to Zutphen in a car. Here they have a meal at half past two in a lodging house, where Van Lennep keeps a low profile. Out of shame, because he is only wearing a blue smock because the tear in his tailcoat is being repaired.

Berkelpoort
After dinner, the traveling companions walk through the old heart of Zutphen, which is still dotted with many historic buildings. They view, among other things, the ruins of the fourteenth-century Berkelpoort. In 1951 and 2011, the ruin was somewhat reconstructed during a restoration, so that it looks slightly less dilapidated than in 1823. In the Walburgis Church, walkers admire the Bader organ from 1639, a copper baptismal font from 1527, a seventeenth-century mausoleum and the library. Later that day they visit the Jewish physician Rosenstein, who had converted to Christianity. This man enjoys some fame among the local elite, although there are people who doubt him. Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp test the doctor's faith and expose him as a hypocrite.
