Description
Today you will discover the former fortified town of Steenwijk. This beautiful town formed the heart of various sailing routes in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The ramparts and city canals are a feast for the eyes. Steenwijk is friendly and lively, a town with a village atmosphere, in the middle of a beautiful, versatile region. During the Eighty Years' War it was in a strategic location, so there were regular battles for the town. Be surprised by the rich history: Steenwijk has more than 60 national monuments, including De Markt and the city canals. The fifteenth-century church tower is the oldest surviving structure in Steenwijk.
