Het Hogeland, Groningen, The Netherlands
Hiking route: 1045197
Provided by: Schoonenberg
First, you'll walk to the village of Kleine Huisjes (in Groningen dialect: Lutje Hoeskes). The village is so named because there were houses for farm laborers who worked in the polders north of the village. At junction 85, you'll find a sundial in the shape of a farm laborer, a beautiful tribute to these hard workers. You'll continue walking past expansive fields. Then you'll walk around the village of Kloosterburen, whose name refers to the two monasteries that once stood here. Near the village, you'll walk for a short distance through a forest. Kruisweg also originated in the nineteenth century as a settlement for laborers who started working in the new polders. Here you'll walk through another forest. Those patches of green are remarkable!
