Zweedse Woningen

Veluwestraat 1-2

The village of Heijningen was also hit hard during the 1953 Flood Disaster. As a result of the disaster, the village faced a great shortage of housing. That is why Sweden donated a number of flood houses made of wood. One of these monumental houses now houses the Heijningen Watersnoodwoning Museum Foundation.

The Foundation keeps the memory of the 1953 disaster alive. 76 people died in Heijningen. This was over 10% of the population. Heijningen is thus one of the worst hit villages with Ouwerkerk, Oude Tonge and Stavenisse. You will also find the Flood Monument there. Worth a visit! Opening hours: Tuesday and Thursday from 2 pm to 4 pm and every 1st Saturday of the month from 2 pm to 5 pm.

Watersnoodmonument

Hoge Heijningsedijk
4794 AA Moerdijk

The flood monument on the Hoge Heijningsedijk was erected in memory of the 76 residents of the municipality of Fijnaart and Heijningen who were killed during the flood disaster of February 1953. In the base of the monument is the name of the soldier who died in the rescue work: Johannes Everardus Willemsen. The monument was unveiled in February 1955 and extended after the municipal reorganization (1997) for all victims of the new municipality. In 2008 the entire monument was restored.

Dijkwoning ‘Fort Oranje’

4794 SH Moerdijk

This seventeenth-century fortress has a great history. It was built in 1654 and until 1995 belonged to 'the owners of the right of accretion' under Fijnaart. This was a society that cultivated the buntings here. For more than two centuries, the steward of the Attendants presented in the dome every month of June the bill for the lease of the lands.

Fort de Hel

At Fort De Hel in Willemstad you can taste, in addition to culture and history, the delicious dishes with the authentic taste of the farm, straight from the Sabina Henrica polder! The dishes are freshly prepared in the mobile restaurant kitchen. In addition, the fort forms the atmospheric backdrop for theater performances and the Night of the Po? See. You can walk around the fort. It is therefore not without reason included in the Floris V-pad, a long-distance walking path of 244.5 kilometers from Amsterdam to Bergen op Zoom. The fort was under explosive stress in the French era, when the fort could hold 9,500 kilos of gunpowder and 14 troops. The French built Fort l 'Enfer in 1811, to defend Willemstad against the English. The square fort provided back cover for Fort Sabina Henrica. Two years later, the French left and it was given the Dutch name De Hel. The Dutch modernized Fort De Hel in Willemstad in 1884 so that 118 soldiers could enter. In 1896 they armed the fort with six cannons, four mortars, two machine guns and four Coehoorn mortars. In 1941 the Germans occupied Fort De Hel, until the South Wales Borderers expelled them on 5 November 1944. Just like Fort Frederik and Fort Sabina, the fort was built according to the so-called 'Tour mod? Le' style. Here there are only three of them in the Netherlands and all in the Defense Line of Willemstad.

Botenloods Fort Sabina

The boat shed at Fort Sabina was built in 1881 and used to house torpedoes and boats, which were used to release mines in the Volkerak in the last century. After the defense function had disappeared, scouting Willemstad came in until the early 1990s. After that, the 900 square meter warehouse fell into serious disrepair. A major fire in 1996 did not improve the situation. The shed is now on the rise and space is being created for, among other things, a permanent exhibition about the history of the area.

Fort Sabina, the 'grande dame' of the Zuiderwaterlinie, is one of the largest and most intact Brabant forts. Fort Sabina formed a circle around Willemstad together with forts De Hel, Bovensluis (Numansdorp) and Frederik (Ooltgensplaat). A strong front that defended us against the English. Later, too, Sabina embraced its citizens: she provided cover during the Second World War. In the 1950s and 1960s Fort Sabina served as an ammunition store.

Curious about the most visited lock complex in Europe? Get on the lookout tower at the Volkerak locks in the fortified city of Willemstad for free and take a look at the many locks, sluices and the recreational yacht lock. In the meantime, the ships are moving from the Volkerak to the Hollands Diep or vice versa. The Volkerak locks near Willemstad are Europe's largest and busiest inland navigation lock complex. This Delta work is of great economic importance for shipping. The lock complex was built between 1957 and 1967 and separates the Hollandsch Diep from the Volkerak. The Volkerak locks thus protect the south of Zeeland from high water and form an important point for shipping traffic. Every year, almost 150,000 cargo ships and various pleasure craft pass through here. Climb the tower Do you want to discover how the ships move up and down? Then climb (for free) the watchtower at the lock complex and look out over the Hollands Diep. Combine your visit to the locks with a trip to the neighboring fortresses Sabina and De Hel or relax on the beach that you will find halfway along the Volkerak Bridge: De Banaan. Don't forget to wave to the captains on the ships along the way!

Vuurtoren Willemstad

The lighthouse on the Willemstadse Lantaarndijk is the only lighthouse in the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant. The turret was built in 1946 by the local contractor Herwig and replaced a pentagonal openwork cast iron light curb on that spot. The light in the yellow lantern was lit in 1947 and extinguished in 1989. The tower is open to the public from time to time.

Belgische Erebegraafplaats

Belgische Erebegraafplaats

The Belgian war cemetery in Willemstad houses the graves of 159 Belgian soldiers and reminds the residents of Willemstad of the Belgian soldiers who died during the Second World War when their ship ran into a mine near Willemstad. The cemetery was consecrated on April 14, 1950 and officially opened on May 29, 1950. In 1963, two memorial stones were added to the monument.

Arsenaal

4797AV Moerdijk

The Arsenal as we know it today was built in 1793 to replace the old, dilapidated Arsenal. The rectangular brick building with wooden cornice was used as a weapons and ammunition warehouse until the end of the Willemstad fortress in 1926. After this period, the Arsenal was only used as a storage for military goods. The striking building has been privately owned since 1960 and regularly hosts cultural and social activities, such as the annual Christmas market in December.

Oude Raadhuis

2
4797AX Moerdijk

The Town Hall dates from 1587 and, like many other buildings in Willemstad, is partly financed by Prince Maurits. Prince Maurits wanted the Town Hall to also serve as a church building (the Koepelkerk was not there yet). In addition to the town hall and church, the building was also used as a court. In the attic was a grain store in case of a siege and the cellar was used as a meat hall, weigh house and under the tower was the prison. Prince Maurits used the tower room to store his papers. Until 1973 this monument was used as a town hall. The open facade with the star vault in the tower was the so-called calling chair and was used to inform 'farmers, citizens and outsiders' of the decisions and announcements imposed by the government. Above the main entrance you will see three weapons. On the right the coat of arms of the Van Glymes family, in the middle the coat of arms of Prince Maurits and on the left the coat of arms of the former municipality of Willemstad. In 1999 the municipality of Moerdijk sold the monument to a private owner. Since then, the Town Hall can only be visited during special events.

D’Orangemolen

d'Orangemolen 11
4797AT Moerdijk

d 'Orangemolen is a round stone tower mill, named after the Oranje-Nassau family. That family had and has always had a strong bond with Willemstad. It is a very large round mill that can be seen from miles away from the Hollands Diep. The restored mill has been inhabited permanently for years, the state of maintenance is excellent and it has been turned frequently for several years. Guided tours are possible by appointment.

Koepelkerk

Koepelkerk 19
4797AA Moerdijk

The Koepelkerk is located in the middle of the center of the fortified city of Willemstad. This church from 1607 was built with financial support from Prince Maurits and is the first church in the Netherlands to be built especially for Protestant worship. The church was built in an octagonal shape (central construction), entirely in accordance with Prince Maurits's wishes. The church was built without a wreath of chapels and aisles. Not the altar, but the pulpit was to be the centerpiece. The church is a model for many later Protestant churches. Over the years, the Koepelkerk has been rebuilt and restored. During the opening, visitors can learn about the history of the church and climb the tower from panels and texts. The hostesses and gentlemen present on Saturday are also happy to tell you about the church. In the tower, the Friends of the Koepelkerk Foundation regularly organizes exhibitions that can be viewed during a visit to the Koepelkerk.

The Vierheulen is an inundation lock from 1861, built to be able to flood the polder around the Willemstad fortress after a few roads had been raised. The lock is on the outside of the fortress. The Vierheulen is the last link in the inundation system and ensured that the water from the outer canal was let into the polder. It is a unique waterworks with four arched passageways.

Kunstwerk De Wachter

Oostdijk
4797SC Moerdijk

Artwork De Wachter (7), by artist Marius Boender, was built along the Hollandsch Diep on the spot where the dyke broke during the 1953 Flood Disaster. The monument was prompted by the completion of the dyke reinforcement in 2001. The artwork is a whopping eight meters high, pyramid-like clay mountain, covered with grass. You can climb the artwork via a path that winds its way across the artwork. Chances are that you will do this in the company of grazing sheep. The creation of the artwork was a challenge, because factors such as weight (not too heavy), weather resistance (rain and wind) and construction (not subsiding under pressure from visitors) had to be taken into account.

Fort Bovensluis

22
4797 SC Moerdijk
https://www.zuiderwaterlinie.nl/11-vestingsteden/forten-in-nederland/fort-buitensluis

Fort Bovensluis between Willemstad and Noordschans is part of the Defense Line of Willemstad and had to provide cover for Fort De Ruijter, now Fort Sabina. The fort was built in 1861-1862 and probably served to replace a battery for the artillery of Fort Haaren from 1673. With the construction of Fort Bovensluis, the dilapidated fort Haaren was demolished and redesigned. Four cannons, Coehoorn mortars, a wet ditch and a redoubt were built here. The defense network served as a barracks with 188 soldiers. Concrete bunkers were dug in the 20th century. After the fort lost its military function, the building was bought by Mr. Boertjes in 1952. He knew what to do with the now dilapidated fort: thanks to the thick walls, it turned out to be a perfect cold store for potatoes. Until today, the fort is in the hands of the Boertjes family and is one of the nice sights in Willemstad. It is located in the middle of the recreation park of the same name and houses the cozy family restaurant Fort Bovensluis.

4791HK Moerdijk

The Verlaatsheul is a vaulted lock from 1769 in the main wall of the fortified town of Klundert. This lock also forms part of the Defense Line of Willemstad. The lock is located on the north side of the basin, where the Bottekreek intersects the wall. This lock has most likely had a predecessor. The lock gates, which were renewed during the restoration in 1978-1979, are based on an original example. The current vaulted lock has a keystone in an arch with the year of the restoration on it.

Bottekreek

4791HM Moerdijk

The Bottekreek traditionally ran through Klundert. It flowed from the Moye Keene through the polder to the Hollandsch Diep. The creek still flows underneath the Creek building. The creek regularly forms the backdrop for various events, such as Klundert at Kaarslicht and 50 hours of pole sitting during the fair in Klundert.

Stadhuis Klundert

Stadhuis van Klundert 1
4791HS Moerdijk

The pride of the fortified town of Klundert stands on the Stadshuisring: the old town hall. A beautiful building built in 1621 to a design by Melchior van Herbach and thanks to a substantial contribution from Prince Maurits in the Renaissance style. The property is completely free and surrounded by greenery. During the week, the doors of the old Klundert town hall open during guided tours of local history circle Die Overdraghe or during weddings. The rectangular building is made of red and yellow bricks. The building has two stepped gables with a gable roof in between. Above the entrance, which is provided with a landing with access steps, is a gable end decorated with claws, obelisks and a broken pediment. On it is a statue of Lady Justice. Directly above the entrance is the coat of arms of Prince Maurits in a cartouche. The two lions on the balustrade of the landing are respectful.

Stenen Poppen Klundert

4791 AH Moerdijk
https://www.zuiderwaterlinie.nl/11-vestingsteden/natuurgebieden-noord-brabant/linie-stenen-poppen

The Stenen Poppen is a masonry dam from 1583 and is part of the Klundert fortifications. It is a remnant of the fortifications that were built by order of Willem van Oranje to a design by Adriaan van Alkmaar. The dam is part of the fortifications in Klundert and thus also of the Defense Line of Willemstad. The function of the masonry dam is to separate the water in the moat from the salt water or the strong flowing water of a large water feature: sea, lake or river, where a fortress can lie. The dam was provided with a pointed edge, the so-called donkey's back, with (monks or) dolls on top to make it practically impossible to cross the moat.

Sgraffito Kreekgebouw

2
4791AK Moerdijk

The Klundertse Kreek building is built over the Bottekreek. Over the years it was a bathhouse, gymnasium and library. IN 1957 artist J. Sjollema designed a sgraffito with three people. The city maiden represents the city, the male figure represents war and disasters and the female figure represents peace and reconstruction.
