Hidden between the polders and the Vliet is the former Fort Henricus. From 1627, Fort Henricus in Steenbergen protected the harbor and the lock and thus put an end to the siege of this city. Fort Henricus could house as many as 450 soldiers and ensured that Steenbergen was an impregnable fortress. With 11.5 hectares, this fort was one of the largest in the Southwest of the Republic of the Netherlands. And you can discover that all by yourself! Walk across the bridge to the fort, climb the watchtower and look out over the landscape of the polders and church towers.
