Enjoy a nice walk with the Vecht at your side. This is possible with this route that takes you over the ninth stage of the Pieterpad. You walk straight through the Vechtdal from Hardenberg to Ommen and on the way you can enjoy the peace and space in nature. Now that is really relaxing!
The village of Rheeze
The centre of Hardenberg is the starting point of this route. From here you walk along the banks of the Vecht to Rheeze. You walk through swamp forests, lush forests full of juniper bushes and over river dunes. Rheeze is a historic village on the brink that has existed since the Middle Ages. On the well-preserved brink you will find centuries-old farms that take you back to times long past. In short, there is plenty to see in Rheeze. It is not without reason that the village has a protected village view.
On the way to Ommen
Then you walk through the woods in the direction of Junne. The trees in the forest around Junne were cut down until the end of the'60s as mine timber for the mines in Limburg. Eventually you end up at the edge of Ommen. This city originated on the edge of the Vecht at a place where the river was fordable.
The Pieterpad
This route is part of the Pieterpad, the most famous long-distance hiking trail in the Netherlands. The entire route covers 26 stages that run from the Wadden coast of Groningen to the Sint-Pietersberg in South Limburg. Follow the various stages through the eastern Netherlands or choose one of the stages and explore a part of the route. The choice is yours!
