The route chooses to go along the coast for a while. the portion selected on teh coast is the most 'cyclable'. In Oostende you will have to slow down a bit as there will be pedestrians. The route avoids Blankenberg in order to not cycle twice on a the pedestrian corniche in an urban area and because around that town there is a natural reserve worth cycling through as well (marshlands/fields).
