Tour of the North Deurningen Monastery

Your route starts at Papillon Country Resort. From here you walk to the Almelo-Nordhorn canal, which you follow for a while. The nineteenth-century canal was closed to shipping as early as 1960, but now you can enjoy the peace and nature. Close to the border with Germany, the Twente landscape is beautiful, you can enjoy a lovely walk through the typical Twente bocage landscape. The town of North Deurningen is small, it has just over a thousand inhabitants, but the place is still reasonably known for Klooster Noord Deurningen. This is an old manor house and a farmyard, which probably date from the early thirteenth century. The site used to be called Het Lubberdink. When the Franciscan sisters moved there, the name changed. An old farmhouse still stands near the monastery.
